We have our first ultrasound today! Horray! Hopefully they will be able to determine the gender of the baby. I'm 18 weeks today, is that too early? Plus the nurse told me I didn't need to drink a lot of water...is that true?

They might be able to tell the sex at 18 weeks. The longer you wait, the better the chances though. If they don't want you to drink a lot of water - this probably isn't the 'biggie' ultrasound. They try to schedule the one where they measure all the major bones, the spine, etc for around 20 weeks. That one, at my hospital, is done by an experienced ultrasound tech - not the OB-GYN, and it's the one where they told us we could tell the sex if the baby will cooperate. My first ultrasound (with this pregnancy) i was told i didn't need to drink a lot of water, and it ended up being done with a vaginal probe. i'd never had that type before. We got lovely photos of the baby, but it was way too early to tell sex at that point. For the vaginal ultrasound - your bladder needs to be empty. For the one that rolls over the tummy - full.

i hope that helps!
